Course Outline

Imagine yourself up on stage, harmonica in hand, playing the blues! At the end of this six-week course, you’ll get up and jam with a four-piece blues band at an inner-city bar Muso’s Night! Yes, appearing with your fellow classmates as The Harmonicas, you’ll play three numbers alongside seasoned musicians at El Rocco Bar.

Learn how to play harmonica with CEC’s dynamic harmonica lessons. We’ll have you playing the pocket-sized 10-hole harmonica, true blues style, in no time! The fun starts at your first harmonica lesson, when your teacher Tony Maguire gets you playing simple blues riffs within the first 15 minutes as he accompanies you and your classmates on guitar.

Outcomes

• Performance on stage with your fellow classmates
• Understanding of the history of the harmonica and its use in traditional and contemporary music
• Ability to play the 10-hole diatonic blues harmonica both solo and in a group
• Understanding of how to jam with a harmonica and "jam etiquette"
• Understanding of how to play “straight” harmonica and how to adapt the harmonica to various styles of music

What to bring

  • 10 hole diatonic or blues harmonica in key of C Tony recomends a Hohner Silver Star ($20-$30) or a Lee Oskar (around $60)

• Notebook (preferably one with staff lines)
• Pen and pencil

About your tutor

‘Mouth from the South’ Tony Maguire started playing harmonica at the age of five and has played in various bands in Sydney, including Missing Button and the Keith Armiger Band. He has performed on national TV and played alongside numerous Australian blues legends such as Chris Finnen and Mojo Webb.

Tony has been giving harmonica lessons and teaching harmonica classes since 2005 and has held beginner’s harmonica lessons and workshops across the country. He prides himself of getting all of his students, from kids to seniors, playing within the first fifteen minutes of his course. Once you start to learn to play harmonica, he will have you hooked on the sweet and mellow sounds of this versatile instrument.

All courses need a minimum number of students to run. If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
